Samaná province is the most beautiful part of the Dominican Republic. It offers great daytrips from Las Terrenas: secluded beaches, waterfalls, jungle hikes, beautiful countryside and great coastal scenery, indigenous Taino sites and whale watching.
Las Terrenas is also a fantastic place for water sports. Surfing, kitesurfing, wingfoiling, diving and boat excursions are all available here.
We have prepared our own, practical and detailed guide book about Las Terrenas and Samaná for our guests. Here's a quick list of the most interesting places worthy a day trip.
Hike through the jungle to this beautiful waterfall in El Limón and refresh yourself with a waterfall swim.
It takes approximately 1 hour (mostly uphill) to get to the waterfall and 45 minutes to return. The path crosses a shallow river a few times, but no guide is necessary. Just follow our detailed instructions and maps.
Horse rides to the waterfall are also available.
We are surrounded by amazing beaches, each one with a slightly different vibe: Bonita, Cosón, Ballenas, Popy, El Portillo, Calolima, Anclón...
Find your perfect beach whether looking for beach cocktail bars, good swimming, snorkelling, surfing, or escaping from it all at an undeveloped endless beach straight from your Robinson Crusoe fantasies.
The least developed coastal village of Samaná and an emerging eco-tourism destination. Previously a pirates's hideout, its relatively wild beach, surrounded by hills, offers a very different feeling from most of the other beaches on the peninsula.
There are good rainforest walks and great mountain-top views in the area. Visit before it gets developed.
Las Galeras is "the end of the world" at the edge of Samaná peninsula. No longer undiscovered, but still sleepier than Las Terrenas.
Rincón is a stunnning, undeveloped beach (for now) with a crystal clear river. Possibly the most beautiful beach on the island.
Boca del Diablo (Devil's Mouth) blowhole is a wild spot with a very scenic access road (but you will need a 4WD car).
Samaná is a world famous destination for whale watching. Humpback whales migrate to Samaná Bay every winter (mid-January to mid-March). Whale watching tours run from Samaná town (Santa Barbara de Samaná) and stop at tiny cay Cayo Levantado for lunch and swimming.
Alternatively take a boat trip to Haitises National Park, with rocky islets, mangroves ecosystem and large jungly caves with indigenous Taino paintings and petroglyphs.
El Limón village, which you pass through if you go to the waterfall, is home of a very authentic, very refreshing and very LOUD spot called "El Arroyito", with a natural pool & bars, right next to the main road. Grab a beer and join the fun and chaos.
Near El Limón is Morón, a nice beach, complete with a cannon from the age of the pirates. The short drive there is very scenic and adds to the appeal of this little sidetrip.
